The History of The Bengal Cat

The bengal cat is a hybrid breed that was developed by chance in the States in the 1960s by Jean Mill. It was achieved by mating the asian leopard cat with a domestic cat in experiments to develop the immune systems of domestic cats against leukaemia. To be fully domestic, and classed as a pet a bengal must be fouth generation or beyond. These are called SBTs. At Tawnyrose all the bengals in my breeding programme are fifth generation and above, and are carefully selected due to their american/canadian descent or championship lines.
